Fly Fishing Usage: Dry FliesPart No: EF-3001Manufacturer: The Essential Fly
Adams created by Leonard Hallady.
This is the Adams Female, imitating the female mayfly in her egg laying stage. The Adams fly, although invented in the Michigan in the early 1920's jowever it is still is a modern looking fly. This is a standard in my fly box and has caught fish all around the world, indeed sales show it is one of the most popular flies world-wide.

As the name indicates dry flies which include Adams are designed to float on the surface of the water. Trout dry flies types which include Adams imitate a wide variery of flies and insects which inhabit the surface of the water. There is nothing like using dry flies and watching trout and grayling rise to the surface. To purists dry fly fishing is the true art-form of fly fishing, indeed some rivers only permit dry fly fishing. There are some dry flies (e.g. the Popper, Muddlers) which are designed to attract fish by the action of creating a surface disturbance. The flies are made from very bouyant materials (e.g, cork, ethafoam or deer hair, the latter having a generous application of floatant). A Muddler retrieved upwind of a rise can often result in a bulge in the water as the fish follows the fly.
A dry fly like Adams has flotant (Gink is the most popular) warmed in your hand and gently rubbed into the hackles to help Adams float and they are usually cast singly on a trout tapered leader. A floating line is used, but with the tapered leader de-greased so that it does not glint and flash light spooking the trout
Treat the Adams with flotant and leave it to drift on the surface. After a while pull it across the surface for a distance of about 3 feet (1 metre) to make it seem like it is accelerating prior to attempting take-off then stop the retrive abruptly as if the fly has aborted take-off. Leave the Adams to site for a minute of so longer then move it again. This will often stimulate trout into attacking the fly
For the more adventurous among you we have provided tying specifications for the Adams. Remember at The Essential Fly we sell the Adams at incredible prices with a top quality fly and service to back it up. It is certainly worth tying the Adams yourself to understand the pleasure of catching a fish with your own tied fly, however at the price we sell flies it is only worth tying one or two Adams as your can spend more time fishing instead of tying flies - buy volume online with us.Hook SizesDry Fly 10-20Silk ThreadGrey or BlackTailMixed brown and Grizzle cock hackle fibresBodyMuskratHackleMixed brown and Grizzle cockWingGrizzle cock hackle tips

Dry flies are therefore an important weapon in the fly fisherman's arsenal and there is little that matches the excitement of seeing a fish rise and take your dry fly from the surface. Choosing the right trout fly can be difficult and over the years it has almost become a black art! The sensible fly fisherman will of course match the hatch when he starts fishing, there are often key flies like caddis, sedge, mayflies or olives that should always be considered when hatching or clever flies like Klinkhammers which with theirparachute and body dipping into the sub-surface look like a fly emerging.
