The Essential Fly

Salmon Flies

There are many salmon flies available to the salmon fisherman. Salmon flies range from the old traditional flies like the Executioner to the greatest salmon flies invented in the 20th Century, Ally's Shimp and Ally's Cascades.  Allys Shrimp was voted "Salmon Fly of the Millenum" by readers of Trout & Salmon, Trout Fisherman magazines.and the Angling Times. Additionally check the credits in "The World's Best Flies" published by The North Atlantic Salmon Fund. Ally's shrimp is said to be the worlds most popular flies. It was invented by Alistair Gowans, probably the best inventor of salmon flies in the world. Ally invented not only the Allys shrimp but the Allys Cascade flies, these are incredible catchers of Atlantic Salmon but are also attributed for many Steelhead and Sea Trout through the world. Ally's shrimp is our most popular selling salmon fly with Allys Yellow Shrimp and Allys Red Shrimp close behind.

Salmon flies come with single hooks, double hooks and treble hooks. However check which salmon flies are relevant to your fishery, some fisheries do not permit treble salmon flies.

Another alternative to the standard salmon flies tied directly to hooks is the pot bellied pig, nylon tube and copper tube flies. These are tube salmon flies through which you thread your line and ties a hook to the end. These salmon flies are great, copper tube salmon flies allow you to get deep within those fast water salmon pools because of their weight and nylon tubes can skip high in the water.
